Studio Associate / Zoe Tweed
Ray has known Zoe ever since she was born. Her mother Alicia McKim is a well-known Denver book artist who teaches at the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design and the Denver Art Students League. Her father David Tweed is a graphic designer in Boulder.
Since high school, Zoe has been working with Alicia to develop a papermaking and bookmaking cooperative to promote literacy in Malawi, southeast Africa. The project recently produced a limited edition book, letterpress printed and bound in handmade paper, of native writer Jacinta Chisi's poem Mulanji Mountain. Proceeds from the sale of the book were used to purchase letter press equipment and produce a commercially printed version of the book for general distribution.
Zoe, now a student at Lake Forest College, spent her summer working with Ray to expand her knowledge of hand papermaking. She hopes to return to Africa next year to improve the quality of handmade paper for the Malawi project.
