Studio Client / Janet Stevens

Award-winning illustrator Janet Stevens and her sister Susan Stevens Crummel collaborate on children's books featured on Janet’s charming, animated website.

Janet has used custom handmade paper by Ray Tomasso for illustrations in three books:

Her illustrations for The Bremen Town Musicians (Holiday House, 1992) were done on paper made by Ray from rice straw and Russian hemp.

Ray included carrots, corn, potatoes, beans, radishes and tomatoes along with a gardening shirt and pants into the paper for Janet's Caldecott Honor Book Tops & Bottoms (Harcourt Brace, 1995).

For Cook-A-Doodle-Doo (Harcourt Brace, 1999), Ray incorporated unbleached flour, flowers, baking powder, salt, sugar, eggshells and a dish towel into the paper.

Ray recently completed handmade paper for a new book that Janet has in the works.
